INHALTSANGABE & DETAILS : Das dritte Kind der alkoholkranken Kate und ihres Ehemanns John Coleman ist eine Totgeburt, worunter besonders Kate zu leiden hat. Um den Schmerz zu lindern, ihre Alpträume weniger werden zu lassen und die kriselnde Ehe zu retten, beschließen die beiden, ein Kind zu adoptieren. Im Waisenhaus trifft das Ehepaar auf die neunjährige Esther, die sie in ihre Familie aufnehmen, zu der auch noch die taubstumme Tochter Max und Sohn Daniel gehören. Hinter Esthers engelsgleichem Gesicht verbirgt sich jedoch ganz und gar kein liebes Mädchen. Sie ist berechnend, kaltblütig, frühreif, böse und lange nicht so unschuldig, wie sie zu sein scheint. Die mysteriösen Vorfälle häufen sich und schon bald glaubt Kate ihrem Sohn Daniel, dass Esther ein dunkles Geheimnis verbirgt.
